Comments: This was the first time I have ever seen this film. I had heard all the stories about how "troubling" the "squeal like a pig" scene was, so that of course peaked my interest. This was encoded using VC-1 and often hovered in the high teens to low 20's Mbps's. The PQ of this release was somewhat inconsistent. Any scene, which did not take place outdoors, was generally full of grain and very soft. However many of the scenes which involved the river and the greens of the trees looked beautiful. I have noticed this same pattern on several releases of movies which are greater then 15 years old. I listened to this releases using the Dolby Digital 5.1 option. Essentially there was little to no use of the Surrounds or the LFE. I felt a bit let down by this as having the sound of the river flowing through the surrounds at a higher level would have really added to the viewing experience. The dialog was presented nicely through the Center Channel and the Left and Right Channels were efficiently used as well. This release is also full of some great Special Features. My personal favorite was a featurette discussing the controversial "squeal like a pig" scene I spoke of earlier. It has newer interviews with those involved in the scene (Director and Actors) and it was fascinating to see the planning and development of that scene. By the way, it really was not that disturbing. I did rent the DVD of this film to compare this new release to and I can confidently recommend the purchase of this new release if you are a fan of this film. If you have never seen this film, I would recommend you rent it first.
